My name Korn Maly, a Cambodian sign language interpreter. I have been working in this field for 20 years.
The reason I learned sign language, because there was a deaf organization near my house and I always saw deaf people communicating with each other. One day, I asked them to volunteer at the organization. The staff there also recommended me and my friend to learn sign language there. Since then, it was the time when I started to enter the deaf community. I started to have deaf sign language teachers, especially deaf friends. The reason I continued to learn sign language interpretation is because deaf people always showed me that they need to communicate with other people, they need to receive information like other people through sign language in their daily lives, just like everyone else. I am a voice and a bridge for them (deaf people) through my sign language interpretation work.”
